Synopsis

Ellen, an American happily married to an English businessman, Jason, confides to him her fear that she is being followed. Later Ellen runs into Jason and his partner, Doug, at a pub; shaken, she faints, and the two men take her home. Doug goes upstairs to make a phone call, and Jason is shot dead by the man who has been following Ellen, Lutcher. The killer leaves signs to indicate that his motive was robbery, but Doug overhears him demanding payment for the crime from Ellen. Lutcher is later arrested and insists that Ellen had hired him, but it is revealed that he was recently released from an insane asylum, and his claim of a frameup is discounted. Doug remains friendly to Ellen, and he later discovers that she is being blackmailed by her first husband, an American, on the grounds that their marriage was never legally annulled. Doug realizes that Ellen was actually trying to murder the blackmailer, and he regretfully calls Scotland Yard.
