Synopsis
For the wealthy young people vacationing at the Italian seaside resort of Riccione in the summer of 1943, the war is far away; all that concerns them are the carefree pleasures of sunbathing, partying, and romancing. Included in this little group is Carlo Romanazzi, the son of a fanatical Fascist leader. One day Carlo meets Roberta Parmesa, the widow of a naval hero and the mother of a 4-year-old daughter. He abruptly ends his romance with the young Rossana and relentlessly pursues the older, more sophisticated woman. Despite the age difference and the obvious disapproval of her mother-in-law, Roberta enters into a passionate affair with Carlo. Their happiness is suddenly disrupted when Allied forces approach the town, and the anti-Fascist population overthrows the local government. Carlo, who has evaded military service through graft and his father's influence, realizes that he is now in grave danger. Roberta agrees to accompany him to the comparative safety of southern Italy. En route, their train is bombed at the railroad station at Bologna, and for the first time Carlo is confronted with the horror of war. No longer able to ignore his conscience, he insists that Roberta return home alone, and he remains behind to join the rescue workers caring for the wounded and dying in the railway yard.
