Synopsis

A local girl, raped and beaten in a small New Mexico town, identifies her assailant to Deputy Sheriff Manuel Vega as a "gringo." Vega promptly arrests three drifters, the only white Americans found near the town, but each professes innocence. The girl dies, and the three suspects--Joe Vorzyck, Mike Marain, and Lucas Barnes--become the objects of a lynch mob headed by the victim's father. Suppressing his dislike for the white Americans, Vega smuggles them out of the jail and drives them to a neighboring city where they will be safely guarded by a white sheriff. En route, the group is attacked by the pursuing mob. The prisoners attempt to escape, and Vega is wounded, but he finally forces a confession from Lucas Barnes. Vorzyck and Marain then offer to help Vega escort the murderer to safety.
