Synopsis
Tomako, a young woman from the northernmost islands of Japan, leaves her provincial village to travel to Tokyo in the hope of finding love and excitement. On her way, she stops in a coastal village where the women dive for pearls. Tomako falls in love with a handsome fisherman to whom she would like someday to return. Arriving in Tokyo, Tomako is awed by its size and frightened by the crowds and noise. She wants to become a geisha but is repulsed by some of the duties required of her. Finally obtaining a job as a hotel maid, she is more and more upset by the seamy side of Tokyo life--the striptease acts relished by the city men, for instance. Her longing for the simple life is fulfilled when her young fisherman rescues her; they marry and return to the fishing village.
