Synopsis
While dazedly wandering around the coast of southern France, a young woman, Carol, is plagued by hallucinatory voices which call her "Ayesha." After escaping from an amorous truck driver who is later fatally wounded in an accident, she arrives in Monte Carlo and stows away on a yacht bound for North Africa. On board she meets Philip Smith, a psychiatrist who senses that some compelling force is pulling the tormented woman toward the East. Upon reaching Haifa, Carol flees into the desert and falls into the clutches of a pair of Arabs. Philip, who has followed, rescues her and decides to accompany Carol to her unknown destination. They eventually reach the Lost City of Kuma, and she is greeted as the reincarnation of Queen Ayesha (She), the beloved of the immortal King Killikrates. After Philip has been imprisoned, he is visited by Za-Tor, the leader of a secret sect who reveals that Killikrates has promised his high priest, Men-Hari, the secret of immortality if he can bring back Ayesha. Hypnotized by Men-Hari into believing that she is the lost queen, Carol prepares to enter the sacred flames that will render her immortal. Philip, released by Za-Tor, persuades Killikrates that he has been betrayed, and the king kills Men-Hari. Longing to join Ayesha, Killikrates walks into the flames and perishes. As Carol and Philip escape to civilization, an explosion reduces the city of Kuma to ashes.
