Synopsis

Sadako Takahashi, a slow-witted housewife, lives with her husband, Koichi, in a northeastern province of Japan. One night while alone she is awakened by Hiraoko, an itinerant musician, who is robbing her house to pay for medicine for his bad heart. Instead of taking any money, however, he rapes her. The next day, Sadako finds she is unable to tell her husband of the attack, and when Hiraoko returns she resists him less than she had expected. Soon she is wandering the streets, half-searching for Hiraoko, who has fallen in love with her and wants her to leave her husband for him. Though Sadako attempts to buy Hiraoko off, she finds herself becoming even more emotionally involved with him. Yoshiko, Koichi's mistress, learns of the relationship, but she is killed before she can gather evidence to show Koichi. Though Sadako finally decides to poison Hiraoko, he dies of a heart attack, and Sadako returns to her mundane home life.
