Synopsis

The young Franz Schubert falls in love with Caroline, the daughter of Count Esterhazy, who has hired him as her music teacher. She follows him to a peasant festival, and they declare their love for each other. When Caroline informs her father of her intentions to marry Schubert, the Count orders the musician back to Vienna. He returns on her wedding day to another man and gives her the manuscript of his unfinished symphony.

This film was released in Great Britain by Gaumont-British. Some contemporary sources state that this film was also released in the United States by Gaumont-British under the title, Lover Divine. According to Variety, this film was shot in Vienna, in both German and British versions, and the later was supervised by Anthony Asquith. The German version was credited as being produced by Cine-Allianz Tonfilm. Some modern sources state that the English version was also produced by Cine-Allianz, with Gaumont-British merely acting as distributor. Modern sources also include Producer Arnold Pressburger and Benn W. Levy in the production.
