Synopsis

Jasper Jones becomes an instant millionaire after he strikes oil, and his fiancée, gold digger Evelyn Smythe, and her mother and brother Reggie, look forward to a future of debt-free luxury. On his way to meet Evelyn and her family for lunch on the day of his wedding, Jasper sideswipes Mrs. Hawkins, a bootlegger who makes deliveries in a baby carriage occupied by her stepdaughter Pudge. Mrs. Hawkins makes it look as if Jasper hit the carriage, hoping to get some money, but when a policemen appears on the scene, she disappears and Pudge goes home with Jasper, insisting he is her "daddy." When he hears of Mrs. Hawkins's bootlegging operation and the beatings Pudge has endured, Jasper decides to keep the little girl. Jasper hires veterinary nurse Polly Pickerill, who takes care of the darling Pudge with avid devotion, and Pudge dubs her "mommy." In the meantime, the Smythes arrive at Jasper's home after hearing he has had an accident, and discover him on the floor pretending he is a bear. Unaware of the true nature of the accident, they believe it unsettled his mind and continue with their plans for the marriage aboard Jasper's yacht. The next day, Jasper reluctantly leaves Pudge and Polly behind for his wedding. Pudge refuses to accept the situation, however, and hides in the truck carrying Jasper's luggage, which deposits her at the wharf, where a sailor takes pity on her and rows her to the yacht. She interrupts the ceremony by calling for her "daddy," and then falls in the water. Jasper rescues her and tells the Smythes that she is indeed his daughter. When they continue to insist on the marriage, Jasper tells them that his fortune actually belongs to Pudge. Seeing their access to his money cut off, the Smythes withdraw. Polly and Jasper decide to marry and become Pudge's real parents.
