Synopsis
Inspector Johnnoe is ordered by Superintendent Bestwick to end his use of underworld informers to solve cases because the practice reflects badly on Scotland Yard. Johnnoe disregards the order, however, and obtains information from Jim Ruskin regarding a series of London bank robberies. Shortly after the tip-off, Ruskin is murdered, and Johnnoe goes after the suspects, Bertie Hoyle and his gangster friend Leon Sale. Hoyle and Sale decide that Johnnoe poses a threat to them, and they frame him for accepting bribes from prostitute Maisie. Johnnoe is suspended from his duties at Scotland Yard and jailed until he is set free on bail. Charlie Ruskin, the informer's brother, learns from Mary Johnnoe that Hoyle's gang was responsible for his brother's death, and, in a battle between the gangsters and the informers, Hoyle and Ruskin are killed. As the police arrive, Johnnoe catches Sale attempting to escape with two suitcases full of stolen money.
