2,000 Women

2,000 Women (1944) centers on a group of resourceful English women during World War II being held by the Germans at a former spa turned POW camp in France. When several British airmen accidentally parachute into the area, the women must hide the men from the Germans and figure out how to smuggle them safely out of the camp and into freedom.

Phyllis Calvert, Flora Robson and Patricia Roc lead the cast of talented actresses that make this unusual hidden gem of British cinema sparkle with unexpected flashes of humor and heart. 2,000 Women was co-written by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat with Launder directing. The film was the first solo directorial effort from Launder, who had previously co-directed the 1943 feature Millions Like Us with long-time creative partner Gilliat.

According to writer Michael Brooke on the BFI Screenonline web site, 2,000 Women "was a big commercial success (the 1944 cinema audience being overwhelmingly female) and although the male critical establishment was sniffily dismissive at the time, it has had a healthy afterlife in feminist film studies. In particular, it has been championed for portraying a genuinely independent female point of view - something highly unusual for the time."
