Synopsis
Will Gardiner, a Melbourne journalist, and Jacky Lewis, his mistress, talk about themselves and about the reasons why Will, a married man, will not leave his family to marry Jacky. For a moment, he remembers the time in his boyhood when he saw his mother go away on a ship, leaving him and his father alone. Later, Will goes to the airport to meet Noel Oakshot, a childhood friend who left Australia for England and is now returning to produce a television series. At a party that night, Noel, in the presence of Sarah, Will's wife, bluntly asks Jacky if she is Will's mistress. Though it is Jacky's last night in Melbourne, she admits the truth but spends the night with Noel. Will goes to the hospital to be with his dying father and then bids farewell to Jacky on board ship. When Noel calls Jacky a whore, the two men fight, and Will returns to tell Jacky that he loves her before he is ordered off the ship.
