Synopsis
Englishman Jim Oxford mistakenly assumes that his bride previously had a lover, and his idealistic nature is so offended that he enlists in the French Foreign Legion to hide his shame. In an Algerian village, where he rejects women, he nevertheless is attracted to Rose, though he knows she is the brutal adjutant's sweetheart. On the eve of breaking camp, Jim recklessly disobeys orders and keeps a rendezvous with Rose. Just as they are about to be discovered by the wrathful adjutant, a gun discharges, wounding the girl; but she paves the way for Jim's escape, then dies in the adjutant's arms, asking him to spare the deserter. Jim is captured for a reward, and the adjutant, telling him the circumstances of the girl's death, shows mercy. Later, Jim returns home find that Margaret, his bride, is blameless and still loves him.
