Synopsis

In 1830, a clipper ship called The Hamilton Queen sails from Salem toward the East Indies. Several months into the voyage, shipbuilder Kirk Hamilton persuades Capt. Tallman to take a shortcut around Cape Horn, but they are attacked by a pirate ship, The Phantom , and Kirk is injured. Tallman drops anchor in Queensland, Australia, to seek medical care, and Kirk insists that the ship sail on without him. Tallman has mates Nat Mercer and Salty remain with Kirk and departs, promising to return in two months. Kirk's presence at the settlement alarms sheep rancher Martin Shannon, who remembers earlier pirate attacks and fears that sea raiders will disrupt the colony's export business. The handsome American's presence has a different effect on little Janice Jeffries, daughter of the local magistrate, who brings him a cake for his birthday. When Janice's older sister Elaine, who is engaged to Martin, comes to take her home, she and Kirk are immediately attracted to each other. That evening, Kirk attends a town meeting and offers to help the citizens organize a militia to protect the colony from invasion by pirates. Elaine and Kirk soon fall in love, and Martin grows increasingly jealous. One evening, at a big dance, Kirk asks Elaine to return to America with him, but she protests that she cannot leave her family. Later that night, the pirates from The Phantom come ashore and raid Martin's ranch, killing Jeffries, burning many of the settlers' homes and kidnapping Elaine and her friend, Nancy Holden. Kirk and his men borrow a sloop and set out after the pirates, and on board, Salty and Nat find a frightened Janice hiding in a chest. Some of Kirk's men swim underwater to the pirate ship, then board it and engage in a fierce battle that leaves Martin wounded. Both ships are consumed by flames, and Kirk, Martin, shipmate John Hartley and the women escape in a rowboat. After drifting for a day, they reach a desert island in the Dutch East Indies, and the next morning, Kirk discovers that their lifeboat has been destroyed by the pounding surf. After watching in horror as two giant, prehistoric reptiles fight each other, the weary group hikes through the desert until they come to a lush, habitable region of the island. Meanwhile, in Queensland, Tallman returns, and after speaking with the other survivors of the sea battle, decides to search for Kirk. Two weeks pass, and the castaways are preparing to set out on a raft they have built when the island's volcano erupts. The violent eruption continues throughout the night, and Martin is fatally injured by falling rocks. The next morning, Tallman's clipper reaches the island, and the castaways are rescued.
