Synopsis

Marfa, a Russian girl of noble birth, is to be forced to marry Tsar Ivan the Terrible. Ivan's friend and bodyguard Gryaznoy, a man of wild and passionate nature, also loves Marfa. To captivate her, he persuades a German physician to prepare a love potion. Lyubasha, Gryaznoy's mistress, overhears his plan and substitutes poison for the philter. At the feast where Ivan is to announce his betrothal, Marfa drinks the poison and, dying, goes mad. When Ivan enters the hall, the remorseful Gryaznoy reveals that he has given Marfa a potion and is seized by the guards, whereupon Lyubasha confesses to the poisoning. Gryaznoy stabs her and then is led away to die.
