Synopsis

The first portion of the film is fictional and tells of an impoverished Brazilian family who leave their home in the dust-bowl northeastern section of the country in the hope of finding a better way of life in São Paulo. After an arduous journey which takes them through Recife, Miguel and Maria are forced to move into a São Paulo shantytown, and Miguel takes a low-paying job as a construction worker. The documentary portion of the film includes narration which provides information about Brazil's poor economic situation in relation to the rest of the world. Also shown are bulletins and newspaper headlines about U. S. events and roadside billboards advertising American companies and their products.
