Co-screenwriter Michael Hastings adapted the screenplay from his 1984 play, produced Off Broadway at the Public Theater in 1985. Hastings began work on the play in 1979 with a commission from Britain's Royal Court Theater. Actress Miranda Richardson first portrayed Vivienne Haigh-Wood in a 1992 BBC radio version of Hastings' play.
