Synopsis

Benny Lederwitski, the latest of a long line of serious composers and musicians, breaks with his family and gets a job plugging songs for a music publisher in Tin-pan Alley. Benny changes his name to Russ Glover and falls in love with Elaine Smith, a secretary, for whom he writes a song. Lon Roberts, an underhanded songwriter, steals the song and then accuses Benny of plagiarism. Benny loses his job and is reduced to banging a piano in a slum cafe. Tormented by despair and remorse, he absentmindedly composes a masterpiece on the back of a menu. The kindly cafe violinist takes the composition to a publisher of serious music, and David Lederwitski, Benny's father, soon becomes interested in its enchanting harmonies and goes to the cafe, where he is tearfully renited with his son.
