Synopsis
In the 1920's, an impoverished widow, Maria Grazia, lives with her two grown children in the Ardengo villa. The last aristocratic remnant of her once wealthy family, Maria Grazia is blind to the fact that her ruthlessly opportunistic lover, Leo, has used their affair to gain control of her inheritance and is making advances toward her daughter Carla. Furthermore, Leo's domination has drained both Carla and her brother Michele of their self-respect and moral convictions; they now accept with indifference the decadent pattern of living surrounding them. Also present at the villa is Leo's former mistress, Lisa, who is eager to inform Michele of Leo's designs on Carla. Michele, however, has already become too ineffectual to do anything more than plead with his sister not to accept Leo's offer of marriage. Carla and Michele decide to take the easiest course of action and continue their meaningless way of life. Thus, Maria Grazia, concerned only with immediate problems, prepares for a costume ball, unaware that Carla will probably marry Leo and that Michele has already submitted to Lisa's persistent overtures of love.
