Synopsis
In the early days of the telegraph, a rivalry begins between the stagecoach operators and the telegraph companies. The deadly rivalry eventually spills over into the Timber Trail area, where cowboy Monte Hale saves Alice Baker's stagecoach from a group of holdup men. Alice, impressed by Monte's bravery, tries to persuade him to give up his planned trip to Denver and instead take a job with her father Jed's stagecoach company. Back at the stagecoach company office in Burton Flat, Jed disciplines his lazy stagecoach drivers. Later, Jed's brother Ralph, who runs a telegraph company, arrives at the office with the sheriff, and demands that Jed be arrested for attempting to sever his telegraph wires. When Jed insists that Ralph be arrested for sending out holdup men to ruin his stagecoach business, the two men settle their differences with their fists. As the men fight, Alice tells Monte that the brothers' long-standing feud started many years earlier, when they both fell in love with same girl. Meanwhile, Big Bart, who is using intimidation tactics to seize control of both the telegraph and stagecoach interests in the region, also gains control of the local bank by threatening to expose bank president Jordan Weatherbee as a convicted forger. Monte, who never intended to stay long in Burton Flat, quits as a stagecoach driver for Jed, but just as he is about to leave, he is attacked by Bart's men and told to stay away from the stage line. The attack prompts Monte to remain in town and fight Bart. When Monte learns that Jed has been given a false story about a stage wreck at Timber Trail and is being set up for an ambush, he rushes to the scene with reinforcements and engages Bart's men in a shootout. After the fiery gun battle, Monte overhears Bart telling Ralph that the man who was burned to death in the attack was Jed. Monte knows that Jed is alive, however, and tells Jed to stay out of sight and let everyone think he is dead so that he can prove that Bart is framing him for the town's troubles. When Weatherbee, who also believes that Jed is dead, informs Alice that her father's company has been foreclosed, Jed emerges from his hiding place and forces the banker to sign a confession. Just then, Monte and Jed are arrested for murder, but Monte creates a momentary diversion, and both he and Jed escape. Jed and Monte follow Weatherbee to Bart's hideout, where, following a gun battle, Bart is subdued and forced to confess his part in the conspiracy. As Jed and Ralph patch up their differences, Monte tells Alice that he intends to stay with her in Burton Flat.

Although a July 1947 Hollywood Reporter news item announced that Republic had purchased a screen story by J. Benton Cheney titled "Timber Trail," Cheney's contribution to this film, if any, has not been confirmed. According to late 1947 Hollywood Reporter news items, Adrian Booth was to co-star in the film with Monte Hale.
