Synopsis
A young boy named Tiko, who lives on a Polynesian island of fisher-folk, finds a baby shark and, aided by his young friend Diana, raises it in a lagoon on a remote part of the island. Once the shark becomes mature, however, Tiko releases his pet and sends it into deeper waters. In the decade that follows, the simple island life is drastically altered by the emergence of organized fisheries controlled by a monopoly. Tiko resists the encroachments of civilization and earns his living by diving for mother-of-pearl. Diana, whose brother becomes a major figure in the monopoly, abandons the island to study at a school in America. Then one day the shark returns to Tiko, thus enabling him to dive in deep and dangerous water, the pet providing protection and constant vigil. But when the business concern burns the natives' homes and attempts to kill the shark, Tiko almost loses his life protecting the pet, and he decides to seek another island, untouched by civilization. Accompanied by Diana, who has recently returned to the island, he sets sail in a small craft with the shark following close behind.
