Synopsis

Francesco Vincenzini, a handsome and dynamic 45-year-old engineer in Rome, becomes a grandfather for the first time and suffers the first emotional shock of advancing old age. He receives another shock when his teenaged son attempts suicide because he has been rejected by Carolina, a flirtatious art student. Francesco visits the girl to rebuke her for her callousness, but instead, he is seduced by her. Despite his better judgment and the advice of an old friend, Francesco plunges into an affair with Carolina, neglecting his work, reputation, and family. Eventually, Carolina demands that he abandon everything and go to Paris with her. Unable to resist, Francesco writes a farewell letter to his wife, Esperia, and goes to the train to meet Carolina. At the last minute, however, he realizes that he cannot recapture his youth. Sadly, he returns home, and Esperia pretends that she never received his farewell letter.
