Synopsis

While the frontier town of Ora Grande celebrates, outlaw chief Wolf Munro leads Jim Dale and the rest of his gang in a raid on the unsuspecting town. In response to the growing lawlessness, Judge Patterson assures the townspeople that the establishment of the Wells Fargo Headquarters in Ora Grande will institute law and order. His promises seem empty, however, when Wolf and his gang mortally wound the town saloon keeper and steal the gold from his safe. Determined to wipe out the renegades, the town forms a posse and to escape his pursuers, Wolf proposes leaving behind Tucson, a grizzled old timer who had been wounded during the raid. Disagreeing with Wolf's plan, Jim decides to stay behind with Tucson. Despite his injuries, the old man tries to reform Jim, who longs to return to a decent life but fears that it is too late for him. While Ora Grande plans another celebration to welcome the incoming Wells Fargo, Jim decides to rob the stage. Wolf's gang arrives at the stage first, but Jim's presence drives them away, prompting the stage driver and passenger Helen Patterson to hail Jim as a hero. Spurred by his daughter's praise for Jim, Judge Patterson heads a group of citizens who want to appoint Jim sheriff. Jim, deciding to wipe out Wolf's gang in atonement for his own past, confesses his real identity to the judge, who admits that he had known Jim's true identity all along. In the midst of a party for the new sheriff, Wolf and his gang again strike at Ora Grande and kidnap Jim when he tries to stop them from stealing the gold. After a heated battle, Jim escapes by diving over a cliff and then returns to capture Wolf and recover the gold, thus clearing the way for his hard-earned happiness with Helen.

Notes

The above credits were taken from a print of the film, but the dramatic action was unavailable. The plot summary was gleaned from studio publicity material. A working title for the film was Trail of the Tumbleweed. The film was a remake of the 1934 Columbia film The Man Trailer and the 1930 Columbia film The Lone Rider, directed by Louis King and starring Buck Jones and Vera Reynolds (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.3159). Although modern souces list Frank Howard Clark as the author of the story on which all three films were based, he is not credited on this film.
