Synopsis

Carter Filmore, father of Ed and Jim Filmore, manages the local bank with Ed, while Jim runs the Filmore ranch. Carter has invested heavily in the telegraph line being built by Andrew Belknap and his daughter Norma, and in order to cover his loans, he is forced to sell the ranch, much to Jim's chagrin. The Filmores' tenuous financial situation allows "Square Deal" Scottie, the unscrupulous saloon owner, to convince Ed that if Belknap's construction can be delayed, the bank can seize the company for lack of payments and make a fat profit by selling it to a big holding company that is interested in the project. Ed suggests the shady deal to his father just as Carter is drafting a new will, leaving everything to Ed because he is displeased with Jim's preference for ranching. Ed's dishonest proposal gives the old man a heart attack, and he drops dead before signing the will. Ed, however, forges his father's signature to the will and informs his brother that it was his attitude that caused the old man's death. Ed proceeds with his plan to sabotage the Belknap project by arranging for one of Scottie's thugs to steal Belknap's loan just as he is leaving the bank. Norma and Jim join forces to investigate the theft, and upon learning that Scottie was behind it, they hold him up and demand the money back. Furious, Scottie forces Ed to help him dynamite the train carrying supplies for the telegraph line. Learning of Scottie's plans, Jim and his ranch hands ride to stop them, but arrive too late. In the ensuing gunfight, Ed and Scottie are mortally wounded, and as he dies, a repentant Ed confesses that he forged the will. With his inheritance, Jim lends Belknap money to complete the project and then settles down on his ranch with Norma.
