Synopsis
Even though he is a cynic who does not believe in love, Howard "Howdy" Nelson runs Camp Romance, an island camp for singles seeking love, and stages every aspect of his camp, supplying plenty of young men to woo young women. Hoping to interest famous theatrical agents the Wattle brothers in his play, There Ain't No Such Thing As Love , he goes to their agency and invites them to stay at his camp. Because he has never seen the Wattle brothers, however, he actually invites the Yacht Club Boys, a group of mischievous, poor singers. While Howdy is at the agency, he is overheard by Stanley and Betty Jane, who with Betty Jane's goofy sister Judy form a song and dance team. Stanley and Betty Jane have been offered a job by Sam Wattle, a real Wattle brother. His stipulation, however, is that they perform without Judy, who is unaware of the proviso. So that he does not appear to be dumping Judy, Stanley hits on the idea to use their savings to go to Camp Romance, where hopefully Judy will find a mate and voluntarily quit the group. Judy falls in love with Skipper, the bumbling captain of the boat that takes them to the camp. Once at the camp, Howdy arranges to have the handsome lifeguard, Don, pay amorous attention to Judy. In the meantime, Judy helps Howdy's secretary Gwen, who is in love with him, attract his attention. At a dance, Howdy sees Gwen with new eyes and falls in love with her, but later thinks he has fallen for his own "stage setting" and recants their amorous moment, which infuriates Gwen. Sam, having liked the script Howdy left at the agency, shows up at the camp, but the Yacht Club Boys convince Howdy that Sam is crazy and lock him in a cabin. In the meantime, the entire camp prepares for a performance of the play. Judy overhears her sister and Stanley discussing the fact that her presence has prevented them from getting bookings. Hurt, Judy leaves the camp and hits the road, where she encounters a couple of country folk, Zeke and Anne Canova, who take her in. At the camp, Betty Jane is furious with Stanley for causing Judy's departure, and Gwen is angry with Howdy for his stubbornness. The show goes on, and at first Stanley and Betty Jane dance separately, but they soon join together. Judy returns with a telegram making clear that Sam is a true Wattle and she informs Howdy that he has locked up the real Wattle. She then performs with Zeke and Anne, and later makes up with Stanley and Betty Jane. Sam is released and despite his ordeal, thoroughly enjoys the show and books it for a New York run. Thus, Stan and Betty get work in a show, Judy gets together with Skipper, and Gwen and Howdy fall in love.
