The Three Sisters

2h 37m 1969

Brief Synopsis

In a small Russian town at the turn of the century, three sisters (Olga, Irina, and Masha) and their brother Andrei live but dream daily of their return to their former home in Moscow, where life is charming and stimulating meaningful. But for now they exist in a malaise of dissatisfaction. Soldiers from the local military post provide them some companionship and society, but nothing can suffice to replace Moscow in their hopes. Andrei marries a provincial girl, Natasha, and begins to settle into a life of much less meaning than he had hoped. Natasha begins to run the family her way. Masha, though married, yearns for the sophisticated life and begins a dalliance with Vershinin, an army officer with a sick and suicidal wife. Even Irina, the freshest, most optimistic of the sisters, begins to waver in her dreams until, finally, tragedy strikes.

Synopsis

In the late 1890's the three Prozorov sisters are living in a provincial Russian garrison town; 11 years have passed since their father, an army officer who has since died, was transferred to the town from Moscow. Well educated, they are bored with their monotonous lives and long to return to Moscow, though they are prevented from doing so by their financial circumstances. Olga, the spinsterish eldest sister, teaches school. Masha, the middle sister, is unhappily married to the local schoolmaster, Kulygin, and secretly loves Colonel Vershinin, the new battery commander, whose home life is equally unhappy. Irina, the high-spirited youngest sister, is eventually forced to take a dull job in a telegraph office. The women's brother, Andrey, abandons his university studies when he marries a scheming and unfaithful local girl, Natalya, who takes over the management of the household. Masha enters into an illicit affair with Vershinin; and Irina and Olga gloomily face the realization that they probably will never return to Moscow. Their hopes are completely shattered when Andrey, deep in gambling debts, mortgages the family home and allows Natalya to handle the mortgage money. The following winter, after a fire has swept through the town, the army regiment is moved out of the garrison. Hoping to salvage her life, Irina agrees to marry Baron Tuzenbakh, whom she does not love, but he is killed in a duel. Once the regiment has left and Masha has bid goodby to her beloved Vershinin, the three sisters embrace as Olga wonders aloud if their suffering will ever turn to joy.
