Synopsis
Andrew MacDhui, a widower and veterinarian, lives in turn-of-the-century Inveranoch, Scotland, with his young daughter, Mary, and her pet marmalade cat, Thomasina. The cat becomes injured in an accident, and MacDhui, diagnosing tetanus, orders the animal destroyed. After vowing never to speak to her father again, Mary and the other children of the village hold an elaborate funeral for the supposedly-dead Thomasina, but they are frightened away by the mysterious Lori MacGregor, a healer of animals whom the villagers regard as a sort of witch. Lori discovers that the animal is still alive and nurses it back to health, though the cat's injury has caused her to lose her memory. In time the townspeople become resentful of MacDhui, who, though he is a good doctor, shows a seeming lack of sympathy for their pets; and they begin bringing their ailing pets to Lori. MacDhui visits the young woman, and they strike up a close friendship when he saves the life of a badger. One evening Thomasina wanders near the MacDhui house and is seen by Mary, who, during a thundering rainstorm, rushes after her in vain. As a result, the child contracts pneumonia and lingers near death. Desperate, MacDhui enlists the aid of Lori in the hope that her special "medicine of love" will help Mary to recover. A sudden clap of thunder restores Thomasina's memory and causes her to return to the MacDhui house. The animal's reappearance restores Mary to health, and she recovers to be a bridesmaid at the wedding of her father and Lori.
