Synopsis

While driving home from his office in the Midlands, Steve Howard, an English sales executive, picks up Ella Patterson, a pretty hitchhiker, and takes her to a hotel owned by his friend Jack Roberts. Steve soon discovers that she keeps a diary of the sexual prowess of her lovers and has rated him highly. The next morning Steve offers to drive Ella home, but she decides to stay and work for Jack at the hotel. Steve arrives at the new suburban home he and his schoolteacher wife, Frances, have recently purchased to bolster their childless marriage and finds her in the midst of unpacking. Despite her effort to please him by placing her mother, Belle, in a nursing home, Steve becomes restless and leaves for the Midlands again. After he has spent another night with Ella and then gone to Manchester, the young girl hitchhikes to his home and tells Frances that she was forced to quit her job because of Jack's advances. Unaware of the relationship between Ella and Steve, Frances moves the girl into the guest room. On his return trip, Steve stops at the hotel and learns from Jack that Ella took some of his money and left him only a farewell note. Flabbergasted to find Ella in his house, Steve's annoyance turns to rage when Ella tells the sympathetic Frances that she may be pregnant. Unable to cope with Ella's abortion threats, Steve finally agrees to leave his wife. Sensing that something is wrong, Frances offers to adopt the child, but Steve tells her that he is going away with Ella; however, when he goes to meet her, she fails to appear. Despondent, Steve gets drunk and returns home to find his mother-in-law chatting with Frances, as well as Ella, who has announced that she is not pregnant. After a stormy argument, Frances and Belle leave, and Ella ignores Steve. Rejected by both wife and mistress, Steve packs his suitcase and leaves.
