Synopsis

On Armistice Day, 1918, Fred Williston runs into May Ballard on a New York street. He notices that she is carrying a copy of his first novel and flirts with her, but loses her in the crowd. Fred takes out a classified ad to find May and when she calls, she agrees to meet him for dinner. Later Fred visits May while she is working as a governess and his presence gets her fired. Fred immediately proposes to May and they marry. May teaches music to support them while Fred writes another novel, and soon they have a son named Rickie. Many years later, Fred is a famous novelist and Rickie has grown into a teenager. When Fred travels to Westchester to prepare their new house, Mrs. Valerie Parker flirts with him, but he is not interested in philandering. That evening, as Valerie stays to change her clothes May and Rickie arrive home early. May hears Valerie in the bathtub and leaves distraught. She returns after Valerie has left and announces that she and Rickie will go to Baltimore for a month to translate folk songs with their good friend Roger Blake. Valerie continues to pursue Fred while May is gone, but he maintains his stance, and so Blake reports Fred's virtuous behavior to May. Finally, though, Valerie breaks Fred's resistance and they go out for a night on the town. May decides to return home that same night to surprise Fred, but he is not there. He comes back the next morning and lies about the previous evening. Later, however, a detective hired by Valerie's husband Bert arrives and tells May that Fred was booked overnight in a hotel with Valerie. May covers for Fred and tells the detective that Fred was with her the entire evening in order to avoid a scandal. The next morning, Fred confesses his infidelity to his son and both Rickie and May forgive him.
