Synopsis
While in Bavaria working on a series of newspaper reports on German life, a second-rate French writer, Albin Mercier, meets Andréas Hartmann, a successful author, and his French wife, Hélène. They accept him as a friend and endeavor to make him feel at home in their luxurious villa. Instead of being grateful to them for filling his lonely hours, Albin becomes morbidly jealous of their happiness and plots to destroy them. While Andréas is away on a business trip. Albin attempts to seduce Hélène. When she rejects him, he begins spying on her and discovers that she has a lover. Albin takes pictures of them and presents them to Andréas. In the quarrel that follows, Andréas stabs his wife to death and then calls the police.
