Synopsis

After the Taj ruby is stolen at a London auction by a ring of jewel thieves, Sergeant Tolly of Scotland Yard is assigned to the case. Tolly seeks advice from James Fothergill, a famous jeweler. Much to his surprise, Fothergill discovers the missing ruby in a can of tobacco sent to him by his brother, who has just committed suicide. To protect his brother's name, Fothergill undertakes his own investigation, planning to trace the thieves by a fake sale. His plan backfires, however, and Fothergill is forced to work with the gang. The opportunity to avenge his brother's death presents itself when Fothergill informs the police of a robbery that the gang is planning. As the police appear to arrest the thieves, Fothergill slips away after returning the ruby to the officers without their knowledge.
