Synopsis

The Lachesnayes, an aristocratic French family, are so impoverished that they are forced to strip their apartment of doors and panelling to provide winter firewood. Nevertheless, they remain determined to follow the family tradition of not working. Georges, the most religious member of the Catholic family, goes to church and informs God of the problem and waits for a sign from heaven. He interprets the sound of coins dropping into the church alms box as the sign and helps himself to the offering. Before long, he visits some 250 churches throughout Paris and then extends his practice to the provinces. The police and church authorities are unable to apprehend him, and Georges begins to amass a considerable fortune. When he is finally caught, a new vision shows him the error of his ways. He returns half of the stolen money, invests the rest, and escapes in the family car.
