Synopsis
With their ranges parched, the cattle ranchers must drive their herds to water in the lowlands. Their passage is barred, however, by the sheepranchers, who bear old resentments toward the cattlemen. Working to reach a peaceful agreement between the rival factions, young sheriff Tom Randall rides to the Avery sheep ranch where he learns that hot-tempered Wayne Cameron has made threats in the name of the cattle ranchers and has shot a sheep rancher. Tom arrests Wayne, prompting Joan Cameron, Wayne's sister and Tom's fiancée, to break their engagement. While Joan nurses the wounded Avery, Cameron, furious at the arrest of his son, gathers a band of cowmen to storm the jail. As Joan visits Tom to plead for her brother's freedom, the ranchers toss Wayne a gun through the window, leading Tom to think that Joan has deliberately tricked him. In the ensuing struggle, Wayne shoots Tom, who then rides for help. Weakened by his wound, Tom falls off his horse, but Joan finds him and takes him to the Cameron ranch. The next morning, his strength regained, Tom recaptures Wayne and, after leaving him tied up in a remote cabin, pleads with the sheepmen to grant the cattlemen passage to the lowlands. In response, Zack Avery, the brother of the wounded man, demands that Tom surrender the man who shot his brother and takes Joan hostage, threatening her life unless his demand is met. At this ultimatum, Tom agrees to produce his prisoner. Meanwhile, Cameron, warned that his daughter's life is in danger, orders the cattle turned back, but the animals, having smelled the water, stampede out of control. When Tom returns with Wayne, Joan is released to return home. Hearing the thunder of hooves, Tom realizes that she is riding into the stampede and rides after her, snatching her from the path of the frantic herd and throwing her to safety in a ditch. Cameron's resentment is wiped out by Tom's deed, and Zack, declaring that Joan's nursing has saved his brother, releases Wayne. The rival factions then join in the festivities of Joan and Tom's wedding.
