Synopsis
In Tangier, disgraced American war correspondent Paul Kenyon has little luck in attracting the attentions of Rita, a café dancer from Madrid, despite the help of Pepe, a young, local entrepreneur. Rita has Dolores, her friend and associate, perform in her place so that she can search the room of Adolpho Fernandez, a Nazi diamond smuggler. Ordered to his room to retrieve his identification papers by the local magistrate, Col. Jose Artiego, Fernandez catches Rita searching his belongings, and is killed by her dance partner and associate, Ramon, after striking her. Later, Paul finds the murdered Fernandez, still clutching a bangle from Rita's bracelet. During his investigation of Fernandez's death, Artiego takes Paul, Rita, Dolores and Ramon to the police station for questioning, and Rita is forced to hide the diamond she stole from Fernandez in a drink. Later, Artiego tells Paul that Fernandez had brought the missing diamond to Tangier in order to pay for the escape of Balizaar, a Nazi in hiding. After retrieving the diamond, Rita returns home to find Paul asleep in her bedroom. Rita is seduced by Paul's stories about Madrid, and confesses to searching eight years for Balizaar, a man she holds responsible for the death of her family and friends. Later, Dolores is questioned by Alex Rocco, a local businessman, who tricks her into confessing Rita and Ramon's involvement in Fernandez's death. After receiving an unsigned note, Paul and Rita go to the local marketplace in hopes of finding Balizaar. Later, Rita meets a fortune-teller, who gives her a note in Arabic ordering her to be in the rooftop apartment of the Ritz Hotel at ten o'clock. Although she does not tell him the contents of the note, Rita falls in love with Paul and agrees to marry him, much to the irritation of the jealous Ramon. While Dolores dances in her place once more, Rita goes to the rooftop apartment, where she meets with Rocco, who offers her a small reward for the diamond's return. Learning where Rita is, Paul and Ramon rush to her rescue, only to be captured by Rocco as well. Artiego soon joins them, and Rocco, an Allied agent, exposes the policeman as Balizaar. Ramon is killed when he tries to rush the Nazi, so the heartbroken Dolores agrees to take Artiego to the diamond if he lets her friends go. Instead, she hijacks the hotel's elevator, sending it crashing to the basement, and killing both herself and Artiego. Afterward, Paul is ordered by the police to leave Tangier and is forcibly taken to the airport. He is met there by Rita, who joins him on the plane to Lisbon and a new life.
