Synopsis
Disappointed in love, Duke Randall, a wealthy New York nightclub owner, motors West for a change of scenery. His car breaks down in a small Ohio town, and while waiting for repairs, he attends a rehearsal of the Roly Q. Entwhistle band featuring the singing of Janie Clark, a clerk from the local flower shop, and drinks himself into unconsciousness. Upon awakening at the village hotel, Duke discovers that his wallet is missing and thinks that he has been robbed until Janie explains that she arranged for him to be carried to the hotel and is safeguarding his wallet for him. Impressed by Janie's honesty and integrity, Duke decides on a strange prank: He makes it appear that he has been drowned in an automobile accident, and before going into hiding, arranges for Janie to inherit his two million dollar estate. Newspaper accounts of Duke's death bring socialite Toni Marlowe to the office of Duke's attorney, Carleton Vane. To Vane, Toni reveals that she was secretly married to Duke and therefore is entitled to his estate. Bart Manners, Duke's friend and manager of the nightclub, thinks that Janie is a gold digger and visits her in Ohio to convince her to renounce the inheritance. Janie is on the verge of signing a release, but changes her mind when Bart implies that she tricked Duke into leaving her his fortune. News of Janie's inheritance starts local gossip about her, ruining her reputation. Determined to restore her good name and learn why she was named in Duke's will, Janie travels to New York with her friend Roly. To successfully contest Duke's will in court, Bart orchestrates a smear campaign to discredit Janie, but soon realizes that she really is an honest girl, falls in love with her and proposes marriage. Now suspecting Toni's motives for marrying Duke, Bart accuses her of being a gold digger and breaking his friend's heart. In revenge, Toni tells Janie that Bart was behind the smear campaign. Feeling betrayed, Janie fires Bart and decides to stage her own show. In the midst of the show, Toni storms in to assume possession of the club and accuses Janie of stealing her husband. Duke, who has been sitting quietly in the shadows, suddenly appears, demands a divorce and explains that he faked his death so that he could see how Toni would behave after he was gone. Her reputation restored, Janie accepts Bart's marriage proposal.
