Synopsis

In a tropical country, spunky prostitute Sugar Bowman is set up on a drug charge by one of her customers and given the option of signing a two-year contract to work on a sugar cane plantation or being locked up indefinitely in jail. Opting to sign the contract, Sugar is loaded onto a truck with her black cellmate and fellow prostitute Simone, as well as several other girls. At the camp, they are greeted by the brutish overseer Burgos and leered at by guards Rick and Max. Soon after, the aristocratic Fara Ramirez arrives at the plantation to begin serving her time for killing a man. After working in the fields on her first day, Sugar is summoned to the main house by the plantation's owner, the demented Dr. John. Ushered into to the house by the doctor's servant Wolfgang, Sugar finds the doctor soaking in a bubble bath. When he stands up and offers to show her some secret pleasures, Sugar insults his endowments, prompting him to order her to leave. Soon after, Burgos comes to the women's barracks asking for volunteers for the doctor's medical experiments. Because none of the women accepts his offer, Burgos takes them all to the doctor's office. There the doctor explains that his specialty is ethno pharmacology, and that he is currently testing a drug used in fertility rituals to see if it will cure frigidity. Choosing Sugar as his subject, the doctor injects her with the drug, then watches as she writhes in ecstasy. Later, Dolores, a seventeen-year-old, virginal inmate, visits the doctor to ask him to review her contract, which she claims she never signed. After ascertaining that her uncle signed the contract, and thus it is legal, Dr. John suggests that a medical examination might prove her unfit for work, then undresses her on his examining room table and rapes her. When Dolores returns to the barracks traumatized and unable to work, Sugar offers to cut Dolores' share of the cane. On Saturday nights, the male and female prisoners are allowed to mingle on the plantation as guards hawk various types of alcohol to the inmates. Under cover of night, Fara lures Dolores into a lagoon and seduces her while Simone meets Mojo, a prisoner rumored to be a voodoo priest. Sugar flirts with Carlos, a handsome guard, and once the doctor drives off in his car, she leads Carlos into the main house where they have sex on the doctor's bed. When the doctor unexpectedly returns home and finds them in his bed, he orders Sugar to be chained to a tree and whipped by Carlos. Carlos instead turns the whip on Burgos, who then shoots him dead and violates Sugar with the smoking gun barrel. The following evening, Sugar sneaks out of the barracks and flees into the jungle, but after Burgos catches her the next day, all the women are punished by having the doctor's drug-crazed cats unleashed on them. Later, after Dolores and Sugar formulate an escape plan, Dolores approaches Rick, a sex-starved guard who becomes so distracted by her sensual caresses that he fails to notice she has stolen his gun. The next day, Mojo divines an evil presence in the jungle, and when Sugar, Simone and Dolores dig up the area, they find human bones left from one of the doctor's experiments. Deciding to use the bones to blackmail the doctor, Sugar confronts him and threatens to show the bones to the labor inspector unless he agrees to suspend the cutting quotas and his experiments and raise the women's wages. After the doctor acquiesces to her demands, he vows to make Mojo pay for unearthing the bones. At the gathering on Saturday night, Sugar seduces Rick to convince him to drive her out of the camp in his jeep. Later, Burgos realizes that Mojo is missing and barges into the women's barracks to search for him. In the shower, the women hide Mojo by surrounding him with their naked bodies. Afterward, Mojo kisses Simone goodbye and slips out to perform a voodoo rite that will exorcise Dr. John. As Mojo prays, several guards attack him, knocking him unconscious. Ordering Mojo tied to a stake, Dr. John then roasts him alive. The next day, Burgos enters the mess hall as the women are eating and implies that they are dining on Mojo. Furious, Simone pulls out her machete and hacks off Burgos' hand. Springing to her feet, Sugar urges an uprising, but the guards suppress the rebellion and take Simone captive. That night, Sugar sneaks out of the barracks to free Simone while Fara and Dolores slip out to set the cane fields afire. Sugar first stops at the garage to inform Rick she wants to leave that night. She then enters the doctor's house, where Simone has been imprisoned in a wooden cage suspended over the licking flames of a fire. After Simone is freed, the two women take the doctor as hostage. Just then, Burgos bursts in, and when he tries to intervene, Sugar grabs an antique sword hanging on the wall and plunges it into his stomach. Gathering up some machineguns from the doctor's arsenal, Simone and Sugar run from the house to the garage using Dr. John as a shield. As the guards open fire, Fara is shot, but Dolores makes it to the garage where she and Sugar climb into a truck driven by Rick and Max, who believes that Sugar will have sex with him once they cross the border. Simone forces the madly cackling Dr. John into a jeep and drives off, but when she is mortally wounded, she crashes the jeep into a wall and fires her gun into the gas tank, obliterating both herself and the doctor in the ensuing explosion. The following morning, as the truck nears the border, the women hide under a tarp in the truck's flatbed. Crashing through the guard gates, the truck speeds across the border. When Max and Rick pull off the road to collect their "reward" from Sugar, however, they discover that Sugar has hopped off the truck and slipped way. Back in the city, Sugar once again trolls the streets.
