Synopsis

Script clerk Annie Foster supports her family, which includes her ungrateful brother Arthur, her sister Sally, her hypochondriac mother, and lazy but likeable father, Henry. Annie is engaged to Bill Enright, a cameraman, but she is reluctant to marry him because of her family's needs. When Annie draws a favored horse in the Irish sweepstakes, Mrs. Foster throws a neighborhood party to celebrate. At the party, Bill accuses the Fosters of sponging off Annie, and she breaks their engagement. When she wins the sweepstakes, however, Annie gives her family $25,000 and keeps the remaining $125,000 for herself. Annie moves into a large house with her friend Marge, a makeup artist, and the two women become friendly with the Baron Rudolph and Baroness Yvonne Baritska, who plan to swindle her out of her money. After the Fosters spend their share of the money, they move into Annie's house and invite their friends to her parties. Bill obtains a job as the Baritskas' chauffeur and exposes them to Annie. Disillusioned, Annie goes back to work at the studio, but soon Bill, who has become the general manager of the Acme Lighting Company, gives Annie a real diamond ring, and they are reconciled.
