Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Della Martinson leads an unhappy home life with her shiftless father, a night watchman, and domineering mother. Phil Demarest, 10 years older than Della, easily charms her into accepting his marriage proposal and gives her parents $200 to ensure their approval. The marriage begins happily, but Della soon learns that Phil is a professional procurer for out-of-town businessmen. One night he tricks her into going into a man's hotel room and notifies the police, who arrest her. Upon her release from prison, Della attempts to find a legitimate job, but her prison record follows her, and she is finally forced to capitulate to Phil, who trains her as a high-priced call girl. After three years, Della discovers another woman in Phil's apartment and is forced to leave, avowing that she no longer needs to pay Phil a commission. She informs on Phil and, embittered by her parents' earlier rejection, refuses their help. She quickly deteriorates through drink and becomes a common streetwalker living in cheap hotel rooms. Following a struggle with a drunk, Della steps into the path of a passing automobile. She is rushed to the hospital where her parents, who have been brought closer together by their suffering, visit her and promise to help her begin a new life.
