Synopsis
Crickle is one of the founders of the small town of Boilsville and also is its postmaster and runs the local grocery store. His business is threatened when a chain grocery store opens a branch in town, which is managed by a young man named Jerry. To make matters worse, Crickle's granddaughter Marian, having fallen in love with Jerry, marries him against her grandfather's wishes. When the local canning company fails and the bank closes, Crickle offers to exchange his groceries for produce, drawing customers away from the chain, which will only accept cash. This move causes the chain to forbid their wholesale suppliers to trade with Crickle. Marian believes that Jerry is behind this subterfuge and leaves him before he can explain. Jerry's response is to quit his job. He approaches the wholesalers, and because they know him as an employee of the chain, he is able to make a large purchase, which he pays for with a personal check. He loads the goods into Crickle's truck, and together they escape before the suspicious wholesalers can stop them. Hilliker, the town constable who hates Crickle, intercepts the truck on the edge of town, however, and starts to remove the goods. Crickle drives the truck away but cannot stop it. Finally, after crashing into Hilliker's car, the truck smashes into a tree in front of Crickle's store. The farmers, who had gathered together to demand their groceries, are mollified when they see the truck. When she learns what happened, Marian is reunited with Jerry.
