Synopsis
Gangster Joe Gurney is inspired by New York reporter Nick Denby's column "Look-Alikes" to elude police by finding his double with the help of his lawyer, Ward. Ward informs Gurney's twin William Evans that he is due for an inheritance in his home town, Mason City. Gurney murders Evans and sets the killing up to look as though he were the victim, then steals the body from the morgue to avoid a post-mortem investigation. Nick and his fiancéé, Maggie Moore, who is also a rival reporter, investigate the story, but all Nick finds is a Mason City paper in Evans' home, which he hides from Maggie. She finds the paper, however, and by the time Nick arrives in Mason City, she is already there working for Hector Hobbs's newspaper. The couple agrees to work together. Gurney is welcomed to Mason City as Evans and is set up with Hobbs's girl friend Lorry May, a recent heir to $150,000 from Evans's uncle Henry. Gurney murders Ward, making his death look like suicide, to eliminate the only person he thinks knows his true identity. Nick breaks into Gurney's house to find evidence, but Gurney catches him and has him arrested. Maggie refuses to bail Nick out because she has discovered he intends to return to New York without her. At Nick's urging, the sheriff contacts New York police lieutenant Hannigan, who identifies Nick and immediately leaves for Mason City. The sheriff alerts Gurney to Nick's identity, and Gurney decides to elope with Lorry May and rob her. Maggie, who had been interviewing Gurney, offers to be their witness. At a gas station, Maggie calls Hector and Nick, but Gurney knocks her out when he sees her New York identification. Nick and Hector catch up to the car and bring them to a stop. When Gurney threatens to shoot Maggie, she revives enough to hit him on the head. Gurney tries to escape and after being shot by Hector, falls to his death off a cliff. Hector's heroism inspires Lorry May's love, and Maggie lets Nick file the story in his name, as she will from now on.
