Synopsis
In early 20th-century France little Pascal stows away in a 60-foot-tall orange balloon his grandfather has invented. Although he is discovered shortly after the balloon has left the ground, his grandfather not only lets him remain aboard but makes him first mate. By controlling their flight via pipes and levers they float over Alsace and Paris and along the Loire Valley, and they watch a stag hunt and a Breton wedding party. After stretching their legs on the ground with their mechanic, Tou-Tou, they go aloft again and fly over a forest fire. The heat of the blaze explodes the balloon, and they are forced to make a landing. Tou-Tou puts on a new balloon and they take off again. After flying over the Alps and Provence, they once more make a landing. Alone in the balloon, little Pascal is accidentally sent aloft, but, as the balloon dips toward the sea, the boy jumps onto the sand before the balloon drifts away.
