Synopsis
Cynical pilot Captain Robert Kent has hired on as a mercenary soldier on the Bolivian side in their war with Paraguay. Major Manuel Tovar is in charge of the men at Entre Rios where Kent is assigned. Kent's daredevil flying angers Tovar, who grounds him. Kent also makes an enemy of Mitchell, another flyer, when he flirts with Mitchell's girl Juanita, giving her a distinctive snake ring. He has given out many of these rings, not believing in love any more than he believes in patriotism. Tovar tells him that he is wrong; nothing is more wonderful, he says, than giving your love to one woman forever. When Paraguayan bombers fly over Entre Rios, everyone except Kent prepares to attack. Determined to fly, Kent knocks out Mitchell and takes his place. His flying is so good, that Tovar forgives him for the deception. Kent is slightly wounded in the attack, and he is sent to the hospital in La Paz to recooperate. Against his nurse's orders, he leaves the hospital to take part in a fiesta, where he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman named Teresa. They have a chocolate together, and Kent gives her one of the snake rings. This time, things are different for Kent. Because he has fallen in love, he tries to take back the ring, but Teresa begs to keep it as a momento. She slips off before he can learn where she lives. The next day, Tovar arrives in La Paz to celebrate his wedding anniversary and bring Kent back to Entre Rios. At the anniversary party, Kent learns that Teresa is Tovar's wife. While he is packing, Tovar finds the snake ring that Kent gave Teresa. Then he overhears the two of them talking on the balcony and assumes that they had an affair. He refuses to listen to Teresa's explanations and hurries off with Kent. On the way back, he tries to kill them both, plunging their airplane toward earth before Kent wrestles the controls away from him. On the ground, he too tries to convince Tovar that nothing happened between him and Teresa. Remaining unconvinced, Tovar flies a suicide mission and is shot down behind enemy lines. In the meantime, Teresa has flown into Entre Rios to try to save her marriage. She begs Kent to save her husband. Kent parachutes into the jungle and helps Tovar to safety. They happen upon a Paraguayan airstrip, where flying ace El Zorro is warming up his bomber. They steal the plane and capture El Zorro, but instead of returning immediately, Tovar decides to bomb the Paraguayan ammunition warehouse. When that is destroyed, they turn the plane toward home, but Mitchell, who has vowed to destroy El Zorro, attacks them, not knowing his own men are inside the airplane. The plane lands safely, but Kent is badly wounded. Tovar and Teresa, now reconciled, rush Kent to La Paz where it appears that he will recover.
