Synopsis

While sailing from Paris to New York, Patricia Belmont, a bored, over-protected American heiress, meets Bill Smith, a fun-loving life insurance salesman, and falls in love. Because she is formally engaged to the stuffy Barrington "Barry" Thorne, however, Patricia, who is being watched by her longtime companion, spinster Priscilla Prattleigh, discourages Bill from becoming too attached to her and says goodbye to him in New York. Bill, however, tracks Patricia to her Long Island estate and, as Patricia's father Henry listens, begs her to call off her loveless marriage to Barry. Sure that Patricia's interest in the insurance agent is only a passing infatuation with the lower classes, Henry meets with Bill and offers to arrange for his promotion to western sales manager. Although he downplays the importance of money in his life, Bill, believing the promotion is to be a wedding present, accepts Henry's offer. That night, however, Henry tells Patricia that Bill is a gigolo who accepted his bribe and convinces her to terminate their romance. For a send-off, Patricia invites Bill and his hard-working but happy-go-lucky friends to a lavish dinner at her estate. At the end of the fun evening, Patricia breaks with Bill, explaining that he is not serious enough to be her husband. By the next morning, however, Patricia has changed her mind and announces to her parents that she is eloping with Bill. When her mother begins to wail with dismay, Patricia again is persuaded to give up Bill and resume plans to marry Barry. On the night before her wedding, Bill sneaks into Patricia's room and demands that she run away with him. Still influenced by her parents, Patricia refuses to leave, and out of frustration, Bill wrecks the bedroom and threatens Patricia with scandal. The Belmonts and Barry then burst into the room, and Barry angrily attacks Bill and breaks his arm. After Bill is arrested, Patricia once again changes her mind and rushes to his jail cell to marry him and prevent his conviction. While the newlyweds are enjoying their honeymoon cruise, they receive a cable from the Belmonts, who finally bless their union.
