Synopsis
Guilty of prostitution and sent to a reformatory, a young woman named Stefania is so shocked by the degeneracy and cruelty she witnesses that she makes an ill-fated attempt to escape. Later, she is somewhat heartened to discover that the reformatory doctor, Georges, is a man whom she had loved before being sent to prison. Although Georges' concern for the imprisoned women reawakens Stefania's love for him, Georges himself is blocked at every turn by an obstinate superintendent. As all of Georges' attempts to institute reforms fail, conditions become so bad that the women stage a rebellion, only to have it end in failure and the death of one of the inmates. Wanting Georges to know the story that led to her imprisonment, Stefania writes him a letter telling how, after being raped by her stepfather, she ran away from home and eventually drifted into prostitution out of desperation. Appalled by the confession, Georges leaves the reformatory, but later returns, forgives Stefania, and asks her to marry him. When she is finally released from the reformatory, Stefania is seized by Armagos, a sex-starved guard who, in trying to commit rape, strangles her.
