Brief Synopsis

Tom Cloud (Paul Campbell) and his 12-year-old brother Bill (Mark Dennis) arrive in Kentucky to claim the farm left them by their father and encounter hostile neighbors. "Doc" Richardson (Gloria Henry), a young veterinarian who rents a cottage on the farm, tells Tom that the animosity arrives from the result of a wager former owner Major Denning (Harry Davenport) had made with his father the night before the Olympian Stakes. The Major lost the bet and Cloud took possession of the property. Tom aranges with the local banker to pay the old man from a small trust fund supposedly left to Major Denning, provided that Denning returns to the farm. But, as guardian of the Major's financial affairs, Tom also learns that he is responsible for the Major's heavy obligations.

Synopsis

When Tom Cloud and his twelve-year-old brother Biff arrive at Blue Brook, Kentucky, to claim the farm left them by their late father, the two encounter hostile neighbors and even meet with unfriendliness from Josiah, the aged servant who has been employed on the estate for many years. From "Doc" Richardson, the attractive young female veterinarian who has been renting a cottage on the farm, Tom learns that the animosity toward them is the result of a wager Major Denning, the former owner of the estate, had made with their father the night before the American Stakes. When the major lost his bet, Tom gained possession of the property. In an effort to win the friendship of the townsfolk and take care of the penniless Major Denning, Tom arranges with Theodore McKeogh, the local banker, to pay the old man from what they represent to be a small trust fund from the Cloud estate. As guardian of the Major's financial affairs, however, Tom quickly discovers that he is also responsible for his formidable debt. Tom soon learns that the major plans to run his colt, Royal, in the forthcoming American Stakes, an expensive proposition that would conflict with his own wishes to put the farm on firm financial footing. Additionally, Tom finds that he is losing the respect of Biff, whose ambitions to become a jockey have gained the sympathetic ear of the major. When Tom warns the major that his financial position will not enable him to assume any further obligations, the aged Southern gentleman responds with a request for funds to enter Royal in the race and reveals that Biff will ride the horse. After the colt stumbles and falls, the Major has a heart attack and is sent to bed, but recovers after Doc cures the animal's lameness. With characteristic enthusiasm, the Major informs Tom that he wants to liquidate his trust in order to wager the entire sum on Royal in the forthcoming sweepstakes. The major's demand forces McKeogh to reveal that there is no trust fund. A broken figure, the Major leaves the farm, causing Doc, who is incensed at Tom for his insensitivity, to break off their budding relationship. When Josiah inadvertently discloses that the major was actually defrauded by the late Mr. Cloud, who had no money to back up his wager, Tom decides to bet every cent he has on Royal and enters the horse in the American Stakes. While Tom searches for the major, the old gentleman, unable to resist the lure of the racetrack, arrives just in time to witness his colt win the race. All ends happily as the major and Tom are reconciled and Doc and Tom plan their wedding ceremony.
