Synopsis

After witnessing the sixth of eight test pilots die trying to bring the speed record back to America, pilots Jerry Ahearn and Tim Robertson argue because Jerry is now hestitant to test Speedcraft's new plane. On the highway, Jerry crashes his car to avoid hitting another car, and the driver, attractive Mary Stuart, a former aviatrix, then offers him a ride to the aviation field. Jerry offers Mary a job despite Tim's aversion to having women around the hangars. Later, Tim challenges Jerry to fly against him in hopes of easing Jerry's fear, but Tim forces Jerry down and the two men shake hands. That night, a thief hired by the rival Crandall Co. steals Speedcraft's new engine plans. Tim and Jerry become worried when they see the new Crandall plane. Tim sees Mary's photograph in Crandall's office and reveals his suspicions to Jerry, who confronts Mary. Mary explains that she is Crandall's niece; however, they do not get along. Meanwhile, Crandall, fearing his plane is inferior, sends his henchman, Nick, to sabotage the Speedcraft plane. Mary learns of the scheme, and seeing Tim take off to test the plane, gets in another plane to warn him. Mary is able to warn Tim, but must bail out when her controls fail and suffers minor injuries. When Tim tells Mary he owes her his life, she tells him that she overheard Crandall planning the sabotage. Mary and Tim then scheme to make Jerry lose his fear of flying for good. On the day of the race, as Jerry finishes work on the aircraft, Tim knocks him unconscious and puts him on board the plane. Once in the air, Jerry regains consciousness and hears on the radio that Mary has been abducted. Now no longer afraid of flight, Jerry takes over the controls, and Tim bails out to save Mary. Tim finds another plane, and buzzes the train that Mary is on. When the train will not stop, Tim lands his plane on the tracks ahead of the locomotive and boards the train after it stops. Tim knocks Nick unconscious, and then Jerry lands his plane nearby. Mary hugs Jerry and Tim informs him that he has brought the speed record back to America. Although Jerry insists they both were responsible, Tim modestly says that the record is all Jerry's.
