Synopsis
After winning the Indianapolis speed classic, racecar driver Tommy Morton visits the orphanage where he grew up and brings presents for the children there. When Tommy learns that his younger brother Larry, who left the orphanage before him, has since changed his name to "Skids" Brannigan and has become a daredevil in the midget auto racing game, he decides to visit him. The following week, Tommy takes showgirls Eileen Hart and Peaches Davis to one of Skids's races but keeps his relation to him a secret. Skids races to an easy victory and Eileen presents him with the cup. When Skids makes a pass at Eileen, Tommy decides that his reckless brother needs some guidance and invites him to dinner. Later, Tommy helps Skids get out of the midget game by giving him a Three-A card, a special mechanics license that will permit him to work on Tommy's car. Though he would rather be given a racecar than a job as Tommy's mechanic, Skids agrees to work for him until he can get his own car. When Skids installs the wrong gears in Tommy's car, the error nearly results in a tragedy during their first race together. Tommy wins the race with Skids's help, but Skids soon quits as his mechanic and discovers how Tommy influenced the board to get him his Three-A card. Angry, Skids finds Tommy at Eileen's and starts a fight with him, only to be knocked out by his brother. The following day, the brothers race against each other in the Ascot race, and as they near the finish, Skids, who has been using daredevil racing maneuvers, causes two accidents--one resulting in the death of his friend "Breakaway Wilson," the other in the hospitalization of his brother. When Eileen tells Skids that Tommy is his brother, he visits him in the hospital and begs his forgiveness. Although Skids vows never to race again, Tommy convinces him to compete in the next big Indianapolis race. During the race, however, Skids witnesses a crash and, afraid to continue, pulls into the pits. Seeing this, Tommy quickly jumps into the car and forces his brother to finish the race. With Tommy's help, Skids passes the other cars and finishes in first place.
