Synopsis
A concert by composer Edvard Grieg is arranged by the wealthy Therese Berg. Therese's father, however, opposes her infatuation and exacts a promise that she will not see the musician again. His recital a success, Grieg travels to Copenhagen, where he marries his cousin Nina and is influenced by the works of Rikard Nordraak. News of the death of Therese's father reaches Grieg on his wedding day. The couple moves to Kristiania, where the composer hopes to be appointed conductor at the national theater. His disappointment at the loss of this appointment is intensified by the failure of a concert series secretly sponsored by Therese. Winning a stipend for foreign travel, Grieg moves to Rome. There he meets Franz Liszt and collaborates with Henrik Ibsen on Peer Gynt. Learning of Nordraak's death, Grieg returns to Kristiania and Nina.
