Synopsis

A group of Hasidic Jews live in peace in a small Polish community in 1939. While Rabbi Shlomo is somewhat apprehensive about his son David's unritualistic interpretation of the Torah, his concern is offset by his delight in the love his daughter Rivkeh has for Fievel, a rabbinical student. At first Fievel resists the efforts of a matchmaker to arrange a wedding, maintaining that he must first complete his studies, but eventually he consents to the marriage. Then, without warning, the Nazis arrive, round up the members of the community, and shoot them. After the execution has been carried out and the soldiers have left, the Aryans in the village pick up the routine of their daily lives, apparently indifferent to the tragedy that has taken place.
