Synopsis
In April 1940, at the start of the Nazi invasion of Norway, Peter, a 14-year-old Norwegian boy, witnesses the secret arrival of a shipment in his village. The next day Peter explores the countryside on his skis, discovers the shipment hidden in a snow-covered cave, and learns of its contents--a vast quantity of gold placed there for safekeeping by the Norwegian underground. He tells no one about his discovery and secretly evolves a plan to use a group of children to transport the gold in their knapsacks to a concealed fishing boat, the hideout of his Uncle Victor, a member of the Norwegian underground. The need for the removal of the gold becomes urgent when all of the men in the village are captured, and Peter reveals his plan to Victor. Lieutenant Kalasch, a German officer who is attracted to Bente, Victor's fiancée, also finds out about the plan, but he is sympathetic to the Norwegians and offers to help. He proves himself worthy of their trust when he rescues Peter, who after 6 weeks of helping to smuggle the gold, is captured by the Germans. During the escape Kalasch is shot. Mortally wounded, he dies in the boat, but Peter safely reaches the boat before it puts out to sea.
