Synopsis
Disillusioned with city life, Brigitte, a student, takes up smuggling in a mountainous border region and becomes the lover of a customs officer who is also involved in the smuggling racket. Another young woman, Francesca, lives on the other side of the border and is also a lover of the customs officer as well as a smuggler. Her reason for dealing in contraband goods is to cut down on her country's revenue because she disapproves of its war-waging policy. For a time the customs officer manages to divide his time evenly between Brigitte and Francesca; but when an armistice is signed, the border is removed and the two women meet. Since they have broken with middle-class conventions, they decide that they can all live happily together; jealousy eventually erupts, however, and Brigitte confronts Francesca with a loaded revolver. At the same time, they are the target of gunfire from members of the smugglers union in helicopters and are hunted down by members of the customs patrol. United by their common plight, Brigitte and Francesca escape and return to city life. Though they try to readjust to urban living, they are defeated by the new social order when technology turns them out of their jobs. Not knowing what else to do, they return to smuggling.
